Turn Your iPod Touch into a phone!

To do this buy a pair of ear-plugs with built-in mic. Apple do two sets, one cheap the Apple MB770G/A Earphones with Remote and Mic and another, the more expensive Apple MA850G/A In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic. Both do the job well and with the high-end product you are paying for superior play-back quality with specifically designed plugs.

Fring

Fring is a freeware talk and chat communication program. It allows you to log-in to Skype®, MSN Messenger, GoogleTalk, Yahoo!, ICQ, AIM®, SIP, Facebook, Twitter and Aim. You can view who's online/offline and you can also use it as a VOIP phone through any Internet Voice Service (SIP) and via wireless when available. You can also use Fring to SkypeIn and SkypeOut.

Fring is freeware for the iPhone and iPod Touch, immediately making it an attractive package to download and try out.

First impressions, simple menu with straight forward options. Through 'Add-ons' you can easily set-up user-names and passwords. However, UiPhone have found that Yahoo simply won't play ball and refuses to log-in! My SIP is less well known, Draytel. However, scroll through the various other better known SIPs and tap on the 'Other' option will allow you to an account up. All you need is your Draytel user number and password.

UiPhone has found that it doesn't appear to be possible to talk to other users on the same SIP service for free which is annoying.

Truphone

Truphone is also a free app that allows you to talk and chat. Supports Skype® and GoogleTalk to make free calls and Skype®, Yahoo!, MSN Messenger, and AIM® for chatting.

UiPhone's first test call using this app rendered excellent audio call quality and overall we were very impressed with the exception of having to pay for the call! Just not necessary these days!!!
